Ask a Pol asks:

Have you heard SAFER Banking Act come up at all with your new colleagues since moving from the House to the Senate these past few months?

Key Schiff:

“Not that I heard yet,” Sen. Adam Schiff exclusively tells Ask a Pol. “It's really important that we allow an industry to use the banking system. Otherwise you just encourage cash transactions. You don’t get things reported. You don’t collect the taxes that you should.”

Below find a rough transcript of Ask a Pol’s exclusive interview with Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA), slightly edited for clarity.

TRANSCRIPT: Sen. Adam Schiff

SCENE: After voting on the floor of the US Senate, newly seated Sen. Adam Schiff and an aide are walking through the basement of the Capitol on their way to hop one of the underground Senate trams back to their office across the street.

As Schiff comes down the escalator, Ask a Pol’s Matt Laslo starts asking the newly minted California US Senator about the SAFER Banking Act…

Matt Laslo: “Hey, how are you?”

Adam Schiff: “Good. How are you?”

ML: “Living the dream.”

Schiff heartily laughs.

ML: “Have you heard…”

Laslo smiles.

AS: “Aren’t we all…”

Welcome to the Senate, sir — visit our LCB library!

Ask a Pol founder Matt Laslo’s worked out of the Senate since 2006, where his congressional bureau, The LCB, maintains a free library. Just added free pocket Constitutions. Capitol Police officers sometimes read our history books on break. Haven’t seen a lawmaker study the Constitution in years…*

ML: “Have you heard SAFER Banking Act come up at all over here?”

AS: “Not that I heard yet.”

ML: “How important is that for your cannabis industry out there?”

AS: “It's really important that we allow an industry to use the banking system. Otherwise you just encourage cash transactions. You don’t get things reported.”

ML: “Yeah?”

AS: “You don’t collect the taxes that you should.”

ML: “Yeah?”

Tram Warning: “Doors are closing.”

AS: “It just doesn’t make any sense.”

ML: “And, like, that issue it just seems like this is going to be way on the back-burner this Congress — even though it's public safety issue, having all cash businesses.”

AS: “Yeah.”

ML: “Is that — what does that do for the industry?”

AS: “It just doesn’t make any sense. Not even a little.”

ML: “It’s actually interesting — what is it? Um, the PATH Caucus on psychedelics, they're picking up all this energy, because it's focused on PTSD and that.”

AS: “Yeah.”

ML: “And I'm like, wait, we'll talk about shrooms but not cannabis?”

Schiff’s tram arrives.

AS: “Yeah. I don’t get it.”

ML: “Right?”

Schiff and team head for tram.

ML: “Good to see you over here.”*

*Laslo’s office — ahem, cubby — since 2006 has been tucked up in a 4th floor attic of the Capitol, aka the Senate Radio-TV Gallery.

The LCB’s quarters in the Capitol offers free Naloxone nasal sprays, fentanyl tests & drink spike test strips for the 50+ interns — and our colleagues and sources — we’ve trained over the decades. No limit.
